Advanced Training

After you have your private pilot's license, you are free to fly wherever and whenever you wish.
However, there are a few restrictions on the private license.
Visual flight rules (VFR) will only permit you to fly when the weather conditions allow for outside visual reference. Low clouds or low visibility will keep you on the ground until you receive your Instrument Rating. Also with only your private pilot's license, you may not fly for hire. To receive compensation for flying, you will need to obtain your Commercial Certificate.

Instrument Rating

Your instrument rating adds significantly more flexibility to your flying pursuits.  Without this rating, you must be very careful planning your flying trips.  It is not uncommon to reach your destination, have adverse weather move in, and become trapped on the ground with no way to return home.  Your instrument rating allows you to fly under Instrument flight rules (IFR), when weather conditions would otherwise keep you on the ground.  At TAS, we encourage pilots to receive instrument training, even if they do not plan on pursuing the complete rating.  the instrument training makes you a safer, better prepared pilot!

Your instrument training requires 40 hours of simulated or actual instrument flight conditions and can be finished in as little as a week, or as long as a few years.  We recommend the purchase of our interactive CD Rom ground school kit to prepare you for the written exam.  Once you have some ground knowledge, then we recommend you begin your flight training with one of our Certified Flight Instrument Instructors.  The cost for an instrument rating is around $4,500.00, but can become more expensive if you lengthen the time period of your training.

Instrument Rating Requirements FAR 61.65

  • at least 15 hours of instrument flight training from an instructor (dual)

  • at least one cross-country under IFR (simulated or actual) that consists of:
